Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of musical autobiographies through the life review on reducing depressive feelings among the oldest-old. Elderly, aged over 80, participated in a musical autobiography program for 8 sessions. A total of 21 participants was randomly assigned to the experimental group(n=11) and the control group(n=10). The experimental group attended song autobiography through life review while the control group received music listening only. Depression scale and subjective health status scale were used before and after the intervention. As a result, there was a statistically significant difference (p<.05) in the experimental group¡¯s depression scores. Also elderly in the experimental group recalled more positive emotional autobiographical memory than the control group. The most frequently recalled memories from participants were the ones they experienced during early adulthood (20 - 30s). Overall findings showed that musical experience in association with life events induced one¡¯s positive memory and current emotional change by recalling a memory. In order to manage depressive feelings among elderly over 80s could be managed by emotional memories and active use of musical autobiography should be implemented in elderly care.
